I’ve just got back from a trip to Sweden (blog post to follow on fabulous Swedish gardens), and was greeted by my lettuces which are now ready to supply many salads. Top of pic is ‘Solix’, with ‘Freckles’ in the middle and ‘Navarra’ below-all available from Sarah Raven. (I know, I’ve got a bit of weeding to do too.)
I also have some Sweet Cicely-a most delicious gentle aniseed flavoured herb, ‘Chatsworth’ Cos lettuces (from Sea Spring Seeds) and flowering mustard leaves to add to the mix and am just thrilled to have dinner right there on my doorstep.
Those look beautiful! I love a garden full of lettuces of different colors.
Hi JGB, been inspired by Joy Larkcom and her very decorative veg as well as a few walled gardens that I’ve visited on my travels.
Reblogged this on My garden and it's Wildlife by Wildlife Linda and commented:
Awesome and yummy
Thanks Linda! There are indeed yummy!
They look amazing my salad leaves bolted but my girls (chickens) love them
Hi Gaynor, wish I had some chickens for when my leaves eventually bolt. Was thinking about Bantams earlier on in the year, but haven’t quite got there yet!
Great looking salad leaves there. And even having been away you’ve got that much lettuce and no slugs! 😉
Hi Sophie, a bit of judicious cropping has hidden the nibbled plants at the edges. There were also some lovely ‘Merveilles de Quatre Saisons’, but they were finished off by the slugs good and early!
The heat this week ans been amazing! Everything has put on a spurt of growth, but those are twice the size they were last week – wow!
Hi Colin, yes, I’m really chuffed with these little beauties. Must get sowing again soon though for more later in the summer….
Your lettuce looks delicious. We are having a bumper crop of lettuce this year. I guess it likes all the humid, moist weather. 🙂
Hi Judy, our lettuces are a lot later this year (about a month behind I reckon), but recent warmer weather has really brought all plants on-at last!
I would love to be greeted by those lettuces, love the fact that you’re growing them in the front garden. I’m currently fitting so many lettuce into any gaps in the garden and loving the so-fresh leaves daily.
Hi Andrea, You’re right-the freshness is fantastic (although I do wash them a few times to clean off all the greenfly). I love the fact that I don’t have to buy lettuces for the next few months and I also get to choose which varieties I eat!
Lovely looking lettuces! 🙂
Thanks Judith!
Kew Gardens has turned most of the long flower borders into veg beds this year. The contrasting colours and shapes look amazing. Nice to have a mini-Kew model on the N4 doorstep with your lettuces Naomi.

Hi Nicola, Love the mini Kew idea! Just about to sow some more (decorative) lettuces and chicories for autumn and winter.
[…] you get creative with your space at home? Maybe your front garden, like Naomi from Out of My Shed, on a balcony like Mark from Vertical Veg, or growing up a wall in the […]
Ah, a tantalising reference to sweet cicely, Naomi. How do you use it? I’ve tried cooking rhubarb with the leaves and they really didn’t seem to have an effect. Have you used the stalks and roots as well?
Hi Helen, I generally use the leaves in salads for a delicious extra bite and both stems and leaves when cooking rhubarb. I wouldn’t say it made the Rhubarb incredibly sweet, but it did take away the bitterness and I only added sugar to the crumble topping-probably halving the amount of sugar I used in total. Can only be a good thing!
