It’s started to snow again and I’m delighted. I’ve just spent the last day or so snuggled up with Anna Pavord -guilt free! And she’s such a hoot!
The Curious Gardener is packed full of really useful horticultural information, but effortlessly interwoven with asides that have had me laughing out loud when least expected. Who’d have thought that this doyenne of the plant world had Mystic Meg tendencies. I love it!
So thanks to Lizzie for the most excellent of Christmas gifts and as Dean Martin says, ‘Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow’.
It was a Christmas gift for me in 2011 and I loved it too. We have friends who know us well 🙂
Yes VP, Where would we be without our horticultural buddies! This was such a choice gift.
and I clearly need this book…
Definitely worth the read!
Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll pick up a copy.
Hi Judy, I have another of Anna Pavord’s books called Plant Partners. This one is filled with the most gorgeous images-very near to plant porn I’d say! Both worth having for great horticultural inspiration.
The front-cover is an invitation in itself, This book is definitely part of my PAL (Pile A Lire, as we say) and as my son is visiting London soon, I’ll tell him to forget about the mint sauce he suggested to bring me back and to get a copy of it instead. Merci Naomi et bonne année à toute la famille. Lovexxxx.
Hi Fatima, Happy New Year to you and all the family! Yes, definitely worth instructing your son to pick up a copy when he’s over! N x
Nice to know that this is a good read, I’ve wondered about getting this book. I’ve been delving into a copy of Christopher Lloyd’s The Adventurous Gardener in this chilly weather, interspersed with Ken Thomson’s An Ear to the Ground – both excellent reads!
Hi Caro, Thanks for your recommendations. More to explore after the Curious Gardener…
Nice recommendation! I’ll definitely get a copy. Humour & gardening has to be a fantastic combination! Especially the humour at this time of year. I need a good laugh!! 🙂
Hi Anna, Still looking very Christmas cardy outside, so just about to settle down for another chapter or two. Definitely worth buying for a great winter read.
I enjoyed this too. My first purchase on my Kindle a couple of years ago or so. Great to dip in and out of, chuckle but still learn.
Hi Anna, Have yet to buy a kindle. How do you find it?
It’s a great book. I love Anna Pavord’s writing. I agree with Caro that Ken Thompson’s books are brilliant.
We had a little more snow over night but it looks like it’s thawing here now. I wonder if that is the last of the snow for this year and what February has in store for us.
Hi WW, have always just gaped at the seductive photos in ‘Plant Parners’-my other Anna Pavord book, but will now endeavour to read the words!
Still the odd patch of snow around, but there’s rain and sun predicted for the weekend, so all will be gone for now and I’ll be back out gardening again. Just as well, as I’ve got a whole load of bare-rooted apple trees to plant.
Have really enjoyed this snowy interlude though-great excuse to read wonderful books and stop and think……
Looks like the book to accompany you to spend time in this winter, certainly very useful to increase knowledge in the plant, if I had…
Hi Andy-It’s a great book, and not a huge tome either, so perfect for a bed-time read, or for curling up with on a snowy day or as a travel companion!
It’s a fantastic book isn’t it? I love the way she writes. In plant partners she describes a particular narcissus as being like a piglet its snout in the wind, with its ears being blown back – she puts it much better, of course – and I looked up the flower and she was absolutely right. Belated happy new year, by the way!
Hi Charlotte, Happy New Year! Snow all melted now, so out into the remarkably mild and sunny garden today, with Anna Pavord now being my bed time read. Hope you have a great year in the garden. Talking of narcissi, now the snow’s all gone, I can see loads of new shoots coming through-v.exciting!
I hopped over from VP’s blog. Congrats on the book..sounds wonderful. As for Anna Pavord’s book you write about here..it was a fantastic read and I too, laughed out loud so many times. Such a great ability to wrap you in her garden experience.
Hi Bren, yes, it was a real joy to read and lovely to be wrapped in her world as well as my duvet during the snowy period. Thanks for popping over. Naomi
